Beyond the Breakdown: The New Breakdown Cover Checklist

Breakdown cover is often viewed as a commodity product, but growing regulatory scrutiny, changing customer expectations and increasing service pressures mean brokers should be looking beyond brand and price when assessing providers.

The FCA’s Consumer Duty has placed greater emphasis on customer understanding and outcomes, making product clarity, service delivery and claims governance increasingly important factors in selecting a breakdown solution.

1. Clear Policy Wording Matters

Many breakdown products have evolved over time, resulting in complex wordings that can be difficult for customers to understand. Brokers should assess whether policies clearly explain cover levels, exclusions and benefits, helping customers make informed decisions.

The recently updated Alps Road Rescue wording was redesigned to improve clarity, simplify navigation and support Consumer Duty requirements, making it easier for brokers and customers alike to understand exactly what is covered.

2. Service Delivery Is More Important Than Brand Recognition

For brokers, evaluating a breakdown provider now extends beyond brand awareness, with response times, customer service standards and complaint management playing an increasingly important role in customer outcomes.

Alps Road Rescue is provided in partnership with Call Assist, which operates a nationwide network of more than 1,200 recovery operators. This network model enables assistance to be dispatched to the nearest available operator, helping maintain strong service levels across the UK and Europe.

Rather than focusing solely on advertised response times, brokers should consider network coverage, recovery capacity, escalation procedures and complaint management processes.

3. Claims Governance Should Not Be Overlooked

An often-overlooked consideration is who oversees the customer journey when things go wrong.

Unlike many providers, Alps operates as a Managing General Agent (MGA), working closely with both the insurer and Call Assist. Through delegated authority arrangements, Alps has direct oversight of claims expenditure and service performance, allowing it to identify trends, monitor complaints and help drive better customer outcomes.

This additional layer of governance can provide brokers with greater confidence that issues are actively managed rather than simply passed between multiple parties.

4. Not All Breakdown Products Are Equal

When comparing providers, brokers should look beyond roadside recovery and assess the breadth of cover offered.

The revised Alps Road Rescue product includes:

  • Key Cover as standard
  • Battery assistance, including EV-related breakdown scenarios
  • Misfuel assistance with engine damage cover up to £1,500
  • Four clear cover levels, from Local Roadside Assistance through to European Cover
  • 24/7 support via phone, SMS and app
  • European pre-departure assistance

The product also offers specialist solutions for Classic Cars, Personal Motor Traders and Hire & Reward vehicles- areas often underserved by mainstream providers.

The Bottom Line

For brokers, the strongest breakdown proposition is not necessarily the cheapest. Product clarity, service delivery, claims oversight and specialist cover options all contribute to better customer outcomes.

As customer expectations and regulatory requirements continue to evolve, providers that combine clear wording, strong governance and reliable service are likely to be best positioned to support brokers and their clients in the years ahead.
